For the past couple days we have been reading A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry. The short story is about a young man named Jimmy Valentine, who is infamous for breaking open safes and stealing the money. Jimmy is bailed out of jail and goes to a friends (possible partner in crime) house. After being out of jail for a while, two more safes in two different cities were broken into. More than $1500 were stolen from the safes. Ben Price, a detective that has been after Jimmy for a while, is sure that the work is by Jimmy. Jimmy visits a town by the name of Elmore, in hopes to get some more money. A few short minutes after arriving, Jimmy and a girl named Annabel Adams, lock eyes and both blush afterwards. It turns out that Annabel is the daughter of the owner of the Elmore Bank. Jimmy starts a shoe business in Elmore and leaves behind the life of crime after being there for about a month. Jimmy has plans to marry Annabel and is already feels apart of her family. He also write a letter to someone telling them that he has given up the life of a criminal and to meet him so he can give them his tools to open safes. On an afternoon trip to the family bank with his soon to be father-in-law and sister-in-law and her two kids, Mr. Adams gives them a look at the new gigantic safe. It has a timer where you set a specific time of the day where it is open and accessible. The two children were playing in the safe when both of them get trapped because the older sister pulled the door closed. Everyone panicked as so did the girls inside. Bravely, Jimmy pulls his tools out of his bag and breaks the safe open bringing the girls to safety. Without knowing about Jimmy's past, the rest of the family stands there shocked at what he had just done. Standing at the front of the building is Ben Price. Jimmy stands up, leaving his future family behind, and goes up to Ben and says "lets go [to the jail]". But something incredible happens, Ben let Jimmy off the hook by pretending he didn't know who he was. It was a shocking ending and I really liked the story, Im glad we read it in class
Today in class we learned about object pronouns and how they are used. An object pronoun can be used as the object of a verb, or preposition. Object pronouns can be used instead of nouns because most of the time we already know what the object is. It makes the sentence easier to read and avoids repetition in the sentences. Object pronouns are usually used after a preposition or verb. Some object pronouns include me, us, you, him, her, it, and them. Here is an example to explain object pronouns a little bit better: I sent my mother some emails --> I sent her some emails
We replace my mother with the object pronoun her to make the sentence easier and faster to read. Here is another example: We showed Karen the movie --> We showed it to her. Karen turns into the object pronoun her. Her is replacing Karen because object pronouns normally replace the nouns in the object position. Another example to explain object pronouns is: Abraham Lincoln was the president during the civil war. The nation elected him in 1860. Abraham Lincoln turns into him to avoid any repetition in the sentence. The object pronoun, him, replaces Abraham Lincoln in the example above. Object pronouns are very simple and can be found in almost any sentence. On Wednesday we had fifties day because we were celebrating being in school for fifty days. Everyone was dressed in fifties attire such as white shirts, jeans, poodle skirts and leather jackets. We also did some research on the fifties and I honestly think that it was really cool back then. The music was pretty impressive and I liked how they dressed. It just seemed like the people had a lot of fun. They were always going out to diners, drive-ins, and just about everything in the 1950's was entertaining. It looks like their lifestyle was just filled with many fun filled activities. I feel like it was a lot more fun than this century because there was not as much technology that was revolving around their lives. Really the only technology the people had back then was television and radios. The televisions were also in black and white and I think it would be really cool experience to see it. I also liked the style back then. Women wore long pink poodle skirts and/or fun colored, long circle skirts. Some women though, wore leather pants, tight cropped shirts with head wraps. Women also wore cat eye glasses as fun accessories. The men however wore casual suits and knitted sweater vests. Some also wore leather jackets and cuffed jeans with usually black converse. As accessories, men wore sunglasses and fedora hats. Of course I am glad living in the twenty first century but I believe that the fifties was also such a great and fun time that I wish I could experience.
